however, had to wait. One reason was that the type for the Greek letters was more expensive to produce. The more basic reason was the prestige of the Latin Vulgate. A printed Greek text would question the supremacy of the Vulgate.

With the invention of printing a new era dawned in the history of the transmission of the biblical text. The practice of copying manuscripts was discontinued and the guilds of copyists were put out of business. Paper replaced parchment as writing and printing material. The Renaissance and the Reformation revived interest in the Greek and Hebrew Bible. Biblical scholars began to look beyond the Latin Vulgate to the original languages of the Bible. The scholar who ventured to put the Greek NT into print was Erasmus.
